The process of shooting gallery Images have had challenging yet enlightening moments. Having taken many images of the sculpture pieces, particularly Transformatiion,(both the wood and the bronze) I was particularly frustrated that I didn't feel I was capturing the essence of the pieces. I was wanting to convey some essence of the piece that expressed its essential nature...what it is about. I just wasn't getting it. yes, I certainly wasn't getting it. I took Transformation , the cedar piece to a friends commercial studio. "I just can't seem to capture it" On went the studio lights but to no avail. The very experienced commercial photographer friend shook his head. "You might take a video he suggested...but take along the still camera as well", good advice to be sure. Well the video didn't go much better.
It took quite a while after the studio session, numerous months before I I got a glimpse of the underlying dilemma. I was attempting to capture as a still image a non static transformation... which to me is not a moment nor an image. I've taken a fair few stills since then.. I'm no longer attempting to capture "Transformatiion" rather, I take the photograph that will become an expression in itself, a new artwork with its own essence. I would like to believe that I'm getting closer to effectively meeting this particular photo challenge.
